Somalia
has faced more than a decade of
civil unrest and war following the
overthrow of Mohamed Siad Barre's
regime in 1991. The civil war in
Somalia and the subsequent collapse
of the central government and its
institutions left Somalia one of
the poorest countries in the world.
During the last 14 years, civil
wars, periodical droughts, famine,
floods and tsunami seriously affected
the country and have created a lot
of uncertainties in the livelihoods
of the Somali people. The country
had no effective government for
the last 14 years. After, two years
of tough negotiations in Nairobi,
Kenya, facilitated by the Inter-Governmental
Authority Development (IGAD, the
Somali faction leaders elected a
275 members of parliament and a
broad based government. However,
the government has recently moved
into the country.
